Leah Akroyd Snider’s journey to finding joy and purpose has been defined by perseverance, passion, and her love for working with children. A graduate of St. Michael’s Catholic Secondary School in Stratford, Leah’s path to success is one marked by determination and a heart for making a difference.

Where It All Started

Leah, who stayed in high school until the age of 20, took full advantage of co-o

p opportunities, which helped her explore her interests, and she graduated with a diploma from St. Mike’s. Although she always loved working with children, these experiences solidified her career aspirations. In addition to her school activities, Leah also helps teach dance to young children at On Stage Dance Studio in Stratford.

“Look Out College – Here I Come!”

In 2017, Leah enrolled in the Community Integration through Co-Operative Education (CICE) program at Conestoga College. Designed for students with diverse disabilities, the program offered Leah a modified Early Childhood Education (ECE) program, along with a variety of support from Learning Strategists for the program.

“Having the same teachers throughout the program was so helpful because they really got to know us,” Leah said. “At times, school was difficult, but I loved being there. I was very proud when I graduated from the program.”

While at college, Leah lived in residence during the week and returned home on weekends. Without a meal plan, she developed independence by cooking her own meals, often with frozen dishes prepared by her mom – a key source of support throughout her educational journey.

Finding Her Place, Her Community

Since 2022, Leah has been volunteering in the junior kindergarten/senior kindergarten (JK/SK) class at Bedford Public School in Stratford. She works five mornings a week, assisting with a variety of tasks such as reading with students, teaching proper pencil grip, and helping children learn heart words from the UFLI Phonics Program.

“My favourite part is the students,” Leah said. “I love seeing their smiling faces and getting hugs from them. I want to do this for the rest of my life.”

Her familiarity with Bedford Public School, where she completed a high school co-op placement, has made the experience even more rewarding – she knows the school community and the community knows her.

Looking ahead, Leah hopes to further her education and become an Educational Assistant. “I would love to help students like myself so they can be successful,” she said.

With her unwavering dedication and passion for working with children, Leah is a shining  example of how determination, opportunity and support can pave the way to a life filled with purpose and community.
